I have a theory about Top Gun: Maverick, it's not Mavericks story, it's Penny Benjamin's. It's a story of a single mum being mentally abused by a deadbeat andrenallin junky boyfriend who won't commit to a relationship.
You see I think Mav likes kink shaming Penny while he grooms his men, not for combat, but for submission. The female pilot in the squad is already an outted bender who enjoys being the double adaptor.
