If you Like It, Than You Shoulda Put Some Bacon On It - Bacon - The Game Review
I appreciate a good slab of bacon as much as the next person. Well, maybe not as much as the next person. In today’s bacon age, we’ve got bacon-scented candles, bacon deodorant, and even soap that looks and smells like bacon! But if you’ve made it this far into a bacon-themed review, I assume you appreciate this delicious treat too.
So I’ll give you what you want and satiate your desire with a few quick bacon facts. Did you know that bacon means meat from the back of an animal? How about that bacon grease was used as glycerin to create canon shells to defeat the nazis in World War II? But most importantly, did you know that there exists a game where your entire goal is to put bacon on all manner of objects? That’s right. I’m talking about Bacon - The Game!
From developer Philipp Stollenmayer, the proud creator of comedic gems like Burger - The Game and, of course, Pancake - The Game, comes Bacon - The Game. You’d immediately recognize the simplistic gameplay if you played the other games in the series. Your only job is to tap the screen so the bacon lands precisely on the object displayed.
And that’s precisely it. There are no tutorials, no extensive cinematic introductions, and no overly complicated menu options. Bacon - The Game promises bacon, and that is exactly what it delivers. I was a bit taken aback at first, but hopping through levels was just as addictive as eating the savory pork-based treat. The objects you’re putting bacon on range from pragmatic, like a cheeseburger, to absurd, such as the Mona Lisa.
But it doesn’t end there. You can put bacon on living creatures, reviews, and even abstract concepts. The difficulty changes depending on the object. I found it incredibly difficult to place bacon on the number 17, but putting the bacon on a dog’s head is simple—just like in real life! This is where Bacon - The Game really succeeds. Plenty of publishers spend millions of dollars creating games that are overly complex and stressful to play. But Bacon - The Game demonstrates how you can make an entertaining game with a creative idea and simple design. I guess putting bacon on it really does make everything better.
The music score adds to the simple and relaxing feel of Bacon - The Game by backing the meat-balancing antics with tracks of classical operatic music. I felt at ease and, dare I say, classy as I attempted to flip my bacon onto famous American painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler’s mother.
It’s tough to criticize this one. If you like flipping bacon onto objects, this game is for you. If you don’t, then steer clear. With that said, the gameplay can become a bit repetitive. Tapping on the screen after thirty levels can get dull after a while. It’s the kind of game I’d prefer to take out to kill a few minutes while waiting in line, rather than playing for hours on end. There is some incentive to keep playing to the end, however: The developer promises a juicy surprise that will spice up the challenge for those who can complete all Bacon - The Game levels.
The monetization strategy of Bacon - The Game is a bit weird. To remove advertisements, I was prompted to spend $1.99 to buy Supertype, a different game created by the same developer. But even without spending that money, Bacon - The Game was pretty easy on the advertisements and offered a decent amount of content.
What more is there to say? Bacon - The Game is a fun, straightforward gaming experience where you flip bacon onto objects. If you’re expecting more, you’ll be disappointed, but I appreciated this game for what it does deliver: simplicity and a relaxing experience that’s addictive enough to keep me coming back. It’s nothing I would spend hours at a time playing, but I think we can all agree there is a lack of bacon-related games that offer worthwhile gameplay. Bacon - The Game is here to fill that delicious, meaty void.
