Today I will talk about the Modern Combat franchise, created and developed by Gameloft a company loved and hated by many mobile gamers.
"Gameloft SE is a Paris-based French video game publisher, founded in December 1999 by Ubisoft co-founder Michel Guillemot. The company operates 18 development studios worldwide and publishes games with a special focus on the gaming market mobile games."
I will try to talk a little about all the games in the series, from the first one released in 2009 to the most recent one that was released in 2017.
Modern Combat: Sandstorm
Launched on August 27, 2009, a franchise from the French company Gameloft began, which was made available for Android and iOS.
At the time that Modern Combat: Sandstorm was released, it surprised by the graphics and the similarity to games in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise, which at the time was already well established on consoles.
At the time the game had 10 missions with varied gameplay where in some of them you played accompanied by soldiers controlled by the AI.
The gameplay was very complete for the time, with a left part of the screen focused on moving the character, the right part focused on moving the aim and with buttons that allow you to aim, duck, throw grenades and change weapons.
As in many current games you only have the possibility to carry only 2 weapons at a time, during the entire campaign you can choose between 7 different types of weapons, which could be found in boxes scattered between the maps.
For being the first in the franchise and released in 2009 Modern Combat: Sandstorm was revolutionizing the concept of mobile FPS games, at the time the game did not have multiplayer which was only added on January 28, 2010, having the capacity of only 4 simultaneous players.
Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus
Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus released on October 7, 2010, just 1 year after the first game and this time inspired by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Modern Combat 2, apparently with a low investment cost, had a great evolution compared to to its predecessor.
The game even has 12 different battlefields that take place around the world, with missions as varied as an escort in the Middle East or a silent infiltration in Eastern Europe.
With apparently the biggest focus of this multiplayer version, with the possibility of playing with up to 10 players simultaneously, this at that time was something that was impressive, considering the limitations that mobile devices had at the time.
As much as the game was inspired by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, at certain times it closely resembles CS 1.6 released on September 12, 2003.
Modern Combat: Domination
I believe many mobile gamers have never heard about this game, Modern Combat: Domination which was released on January 18, 2011, creating for Playstation 3 and Mac. The game was fully focused on multiplayer.
Containing several game modes such as:
- mortal combats
- Team Deathmatch or TDM
- Domination
- extraction
- escort
- sabotage
- Thrive and flee
There can be up to 16 players on a server, i.e. up to 8 on each team. If there is an odd number of real players, a bot will automatically be added to ensure an even number of team members on both sides.
Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation
Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation released on October 27, 27, had a great graphic and gameplay evolution compared to its predecessor.
Like his previous "Modern Combat 2" it was inspired by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and also by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
With a very dynamic scenario and an exchange of shots that are often intense, also allowing you to use different weapons during a mission, leaving the choice to play which weapon he would like to use in various missions, it takes place in places like Hollywood, Alaska and the East Medium.
Like its predecessors, the game also has a multiplayer system, with the number of players increasing in this version, from 10 to 12 simultaneous players, allowing players to climb to level 90 when reached, players could obtain a Veteran Symbol inside the game.
Personal opinion:
I personally consider this the best game in the entire franchise, having a great story and excellent gameplay.
Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour
Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour released on December 6, 2012 came with several improvements over its predecessor Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation. Improvements include more "military support" options, more tactical gameplay, and more advanced campaign programming. The game takes place in a dystopian year 2037, where the SGS, a secret armed force, takes over the world and fights the Phantom Unit.
The basic gameplay in Zero Hour is similar to the three previous games in the series, also inspired by the Call of Duty franchise it ends up being one more inspired by Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Call of Duty: Black Ops.
While Sandstorm featured seven weapons and Black Pegasus featured fifteen, Zero Hour features twenty-one, as does Fallen Nation, as well as throwing knives, grenades, different gear, and various "perks". Weapons can also be equipped with various accessories, such as red dot sights, silencers, among other items.
The game also contains a multiplayer system where it was also possible to play with 12 simultaneous players during matches and several game modes such as " battle", "Team Battle" and "Capture the flag".
Personal opinion:
Of the entire franchise, this is the one with the best multiplayer system, much more fun than all the previous ones.
The franchise has two more games " Modern Combat 5: Blackout " and " Modern Combat Versus: FPS " and I won't talk about it for the following reason.
After the release of Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour, Modern Combat 5: Blackout was released, which by name would be a great continuation of the previous game. I was super excited to be able to play it, until the day of its release where all my happiness was thrown away.
With the idea of bringing a free game, Gameloft, which at the time seemed to only care about money, came up with a shameful idea to put an "energy" system in the game.
Where to do the missions in the campaign mode you should have these "energy" that would decrease with each mission, but for you to be able to recover that energy, you either paid for the screen or you waited until it recovered, a brilliant idea to end a franchise that in my view was incredible.
Maybe nowadays they have removed this terrible and shameful system that only served to raise money, but I won't give the benefit of the doubt as I would rather pay in a game than play it with a system that defines when I should or should not play .
Many may disagree with my view on this matter and I understand, even so, it is shameful for games that contain this system where it is visibly noticed that it is only there to extract money from people who want to be able to play the game.
