The Witcher: Blood Origin sucks, but at least it got me to play Gwent again

When it comes to The Witcher, I have an ocean of love for the franchise. I’ve played the games, recently purchased the book collection, and pretty much watched The Witcher on Netflix three times already. I love The Witcher, so naturally, when Netflix announced that a mini-series called The Witcher: Blood Origin would be arriving soon, I was over the moon.
Now, I don’t really follow news about shows I’m looking forward to or search for updates, mainly because I hate spoilers. I initially thought The Witcher: Blood Origin was going to be some sort of filler series to please fans. When I found out that the legendary and iconic actress, Michelle Yeoh, who performed in other movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Crazy Rich Asians, was starring in The Witcher: Blood Origin, I literally jumped around my house in excitement. At that point, I realized the show was going to be pretty big and possibly one of the best series in 2022. Looking back now, I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Eventually, The Witcher: Blood Origin arrived last Christmas, and it was such a massive surprise for me. I’d initially thought it was going to debut in 2023, so I felt shocked to find out on TikTok that it’d already debuted. I remember dropping everything that I was doing when I found out and rushing straight to the living room to watch the show. Although it’s a little embarrassing to admit that I binge-watched The Witcher: Blood Origin for what seemed to be four to five hours, I felt like I wasted all my time at the end of the series.
I had such high expectations for The Witcher: Blood Origin, but it failed to even get near. The series was a colossal disappointment that felt tremendously rushed and messy. There was little to no character development and the story itself seemed pretty plain. Despite the visual and sound design being pretty topnotch, everything that made The Witcher series great wasn’t there in Blood Origin. I felt like I wasn't watching a show from a different franchise.
The series had too much unnecessary dialogue, bickering, and bland, useless characters. There was so much going on too, that it felt really hard to keep up with the series. Even Michelle Yeoh’s impeccable acting couldn’t save The Witcher: Blood Origin and that should say a lot for itself. In short, it's terrible.
I remember being so frustrated and disappointed at the end of the series that I needed to either play or watch something else from the franchise. Since I’d already seen The Witcher on Netflix way too many times, I thought maybe Gwent: The Witcher Card Game might’ve been a better choice. I mean, it’s a pretty awesome game; I even had the chance to play and review it last year too.
From there, I decided that Gwent would be the way to go because at least it wouldn’t disappoint me the same way The Witcher: Blood Origin did. I downloaded the game, spent a couple of hours playing and losing right after Christmas, and finally calmed down. I had such a great time playing Gwent that I’m still playing it today. It’s definitely disheartening that The Witcher: Blood Origin was a total failure, but at least it got me to play Gwent again, so I guess there’s something good in that. I still love The Witcher franchise, but I definitely won't be watching The Witcher: Blood Origin again. Yuck.

It's a C-tier series. Like if you haven't seen it and have no other plans, sure watch it. But if you can choose between other shows, I'd avoid it to be honest. It really tarnishes the franchise and it generally sucks as a series.

Being honest is by far one of the least expressed traits these days, so it's always refreshing to see someone set aside all the insane drama these days and just tell it like it is. Jay Hunter, I applaud you.

Thanks TheLight! It's always great to speak your mind, even when it's an honest and probably controversial opinion.

I really enjoyed blood origins. It filled in some gaps in the lore about the conjunction of the spheres and Ciri's ancestry

it had nothing to do with the lore go read the books and you find out this whole story was made up with no back up.

It's such an amazing game! It's complex, but thanks to the game's in-depth tutorial, learning the mechanics is pretty easy. Let me know how it goes!
