League of Legends is the best and worst thing that’s ever happened to me

League of Legends is an addiction that I can’t escape. I hate the game so much, but I just can’t stop playing it. I’ve spent over ten thousand hours and the last decade of my life grinding ranked games and losing myself in the process. I’ve witnessed almost every champion release and stayed long enough to see each season come and pass. Yet, I can’t seem to give up playing League of Legends because I love it too much.
I was twelve when I stumbled across League of Legends. It was 2013 and I was living in the Philippines for a short while, studying and spending time with my family. After class, one of my friends dragged me to an internet cafe to play games with them and introduced me to League of Legends. I was a little hesitant at first, but once I got into it, I was immediately hooked. Looking back, I didn’t really think too much of the game and wasn’t expecting to play it again, but little did I know that this would be the exact moment my life would change moving forward.
I grew up alongside League of Legends. When the game released a champion, I got a year older. When another season came to pass, I went up a year in high school. I’d play almost every day and still manage to stay in Gold for most of those years. Funny enough, it was only three years ago did I actually reach Platinum rank in League of Legends. I know right? What a hard-stuck noob.
Poor skills aside, League of Legends really stayed with me because it also changed me into a better person. I didn’t really have much support growing up and most of my family was in different parts of the world. League of Legends was a place for me to make friends and learn more about myself and the ways I could improve. Of course, it did help my trash-talking skills, but it made me a lot more patient and confident, not to forget that it also kept me occupied. I never felt lonely because of League of Legends and that was a blessing. I got to meet a bunch of people and build so many memories that I still remember to this day.
However, there are always two sides to a coin. League of Legends wasn't always fun. It didn’t shield me from the rage and keyboard face-planting that I’d have to endure for a decade. Even though I learned a lot about myself and developed into a decent person, I would face the harsh competitive environment every single day and that alone drove me insane sometimes. Imagine being hard-stuck Gold for multiple years and never really getting anywhere in a game that you literally play every day. How malding.
Besides being terrible, League of Legends was a constant, ever-evolving beast that couldn’t be tamed. There was always an issue that made the game feel unbalanced. Not to mention that almost every time a new champion was introduced, it would completely break the game for a month. Add in cheaters, griefers, toxic players, smurfs, and a reporting system that I swear never worked and League of Legends wasn’t always a great place to be.
It was like a loop of frustration and disappointment that never seemed to end. Even when I finally mustered the courage to take a break and leave the game, I’d find myself playing again a month or so later. I’d have one or two great games and boom, I was trapped in the ever-consuming blackhole that is League of Legends—once again.
(Every time a player picks Yasuo, I immediately skip the match. I hate this champion.)
Now, League of Legends isn’t a necessarily bad game, but I’d be lying to myself if I said it was perfect. Thankfully, it’s in such a better place now than it was a few years ago. The game performs and feels better and excluding Aurelion Sol, a lot of the champions are much more balanced now. It’s really come a long way and I’m happy to know that I got the chance to be a part of it. I don’t where I’d be without League of Legends and although I haven’t always been the sanest or most composed person playing it, I’m still glad I came across it. I guess League of Legends is the best and worst thing that’s ever happened to me and I wouldn't have it any other way. I would rather hope to make it out of Platinum, though. That's for sure.
