Is Octopath Traveler: CotC Worth Playing? Weighing Its Pros and Cons

Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent have loads of good things about it, but some things might put you off game right at the start. So is it worth your time?

PROS

1. Crazy Heroes Skilltree

Each hero have very cool skilltree with a lot of upgrade nodes. Based on the hero rarity you can have several skill tree tiers, anywhere from 3 to 5 depending on the hero star rarity.

2. Pretty Pixel based Graphics

Octopath Traveler CotC uses Unreal Engine for graphics. It means that pixel based graphics used in the game will look way better with additional lighting, effects and other fancy stuff offered by Unreal Engine.

3. Well made rich dialogues and story

Octopath Traveler CotC have a lot, a lot, A LOT of dialogues. All of them are voice overed, so if you like a good plot, you should give it a try.

4. Complex Game Mechanics

Other than skilltrees in Octopath Traveler CotC you have inventory for each character and limit break options. Other than that fight mechanic is very curious too. You have 8 characters on the battlefield that are divided in 2 rows, so you can switch them around.  Enemies have certain weapon type weaknesses and when exploited he goes into break state, where he will take additional damage from the attacks. All this make a lot of interesting gameplay strategies to utilize.

CONS

1. You cannot skip dialogues

Well you can, but even then its slow. In Octopath Traveler CotC you cant skip cutscenes, transitions between dialogues and such. In 1 hour of playing Octopath Traveler CotC I had about 5-6 fight and spend most of the time skipping dialogues. Game would be so much better if it would give players option to do that.

2. Complex game mechanics

Its actually a good thing, but might scare off some newer players from Octopath Traveler CotC, specifically used to simple mobile games. A lot of characters to equip, manage, skills to learn and use. Weapon weakness mechanics and other things need to be understood to properly play the game. Also some fights can be pretty hard.

3. Gacha mechanics.

A lot of players complained about Octopath Traveler CotC gacha summon mechanics, but I've seen comments of players who got through the game completely f2p, since you dont really need all those fancy top tier 5 star characters.

Conclusion. Is Octopath Traveler CotC Good?

Yes!

At first I wanted to claim this game boring because of 30 minutes of dialogues at the start of the game, but when I got to combat and character progression mechanics I changed my Octopath Traveler CotC is a really good example of saying: "Dont judge book by its cover", or in this case, give it some time to uncover its strong sides.
