Krafton & NetEase in Court Over PUBG Copyright Dispute

Translate
Krafton and NetEase have appeared in court for an ongoing lawsuit in which Krafton claims that two of NetEase's battle royale games, Knives Out and Rules of Survival, infringe on their PUBG copyright. Although the case was originally settled in 2019, Krafton claimed that NetEase violated the terms of the settlement in 2023.
In response, NetEase admitted to the violation but claimed that it was unintentional and had already been voluntarily rectified. The ongoing legal action centers around a specific term in the agreement and whether it was applied in the correct context.
The dispute highlights the challenge of protecting intellectual property in the battle royale genre, which has exploded in popularity, particularly on mobile. PUBG Mobile remains a major player, but the game has lagged behind rivals such as Fortnite on consoles, which could explain why Krafton is eager to take action against similar titles.
NetEase has a history of litigation and public disputes, including a breakup with former partner Activision Blizzard and a previous erroneous report that they had filed a lawsuit against them. The outcome of this latest disagreement in court is yet to be seen.
