20 Pokémon characters inspired by real wild animals（1/4）
It is often said that art originates from life, and the design of Pokémon is also inspired by the real world. In the following four parts, I will present to you a total of twenty Pokémon and their corresponding sources of inspiration.
1.Dragalge/leafy seadragon (Phycodurus eques)
This aquatic character draws inspiration from the leafy seadragon (Phycodurus eques), a marine fish species found near the Australian coast. While there is a strong resemblance, there are some notable differences. Unlike the Pokémon, which can spray a highly corrosive poison, sea dragons are completely harmless and peaceful. Instead, they rely on their intricate camouflage to evade predators by blending seamlessly with floating seaweed.
2.Drowzee/Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus)
With its short, flexible trunk and barrel-shaped body, this Pokémon bears a striking resemblance to a tapir. Tapirs are not limited to a single species but encompass a family of four distinct species found in different geographical regions.
Drowzee shares the closest resemblance to the Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus), particularly in terms of its body structure with two contrasting colors, although not as vibrant. These majestic creatures typically reach a height of about 1 meter and are herbivorous, utilizing their prehensile trunks to pluck fruits and vegetation from branches.
3.Krookodile/gharial (Gavialis gangeticus)
Krookodile's design draws inspiration from crocodilians, particularly resembling the gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) with its long and narrow snout that widens at the tip.
Gharials, also referred to as fish-eating crocodiles, inhabit freshwater river systems in India and Nepal. Despite their peculiar appearance, their elongated snouts are well-suited for capturing fish. Unlike other crocodilians that rely on stalking their prey, gharials utilize their specialized snouts to detect vibrations in the water surrounding them, enabling them to seize passing fish.
4.Dewgong/dugong (Dugong dugon)
Despite sharing attributes with narwhals and beluga whales, this Pokémon is primarily inspired by the dugong, as its name suggests. Dugongs, also known as sea cows, are gentle marine mammals that can be found peacefully grazing on seagrass in the warm coastal waters of the Pacific and Indian oceans.
Although they are called sea cows, dugongs are not closely related to cows and are actually more closely related to manatees. However, the Pokémon character based on the dugong, Dewgong, differs significantly from its real-life counterpart. Dewgong thrives in colder temperatures and inhabits icy oceans, often residing on icebergs.
5. Mankey/Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus)
While it may not bear a strong resemblance in appearance, this character is believed to be inspired by a monkey, particularly a Barbary macaque, according to some suggestions. It exhibits agility in climbing and possesses a sociable nature, much like its real-world counterpart that lives in large colonies in treetops. However, its tail indicates a closer resemblance to a New World monkey rather than a macaque.
Similar to Mankey, New World monkeys possess prehensile tails, which set them apart from their African and Asian relatives. They utilize their tails like an additional hand, gripping branches, vines, and even supporting their entire body weight. It's worth noting that Mankey also has three fingers on each hand, which is unique among primates since most have five fingers. As a result, it becomes challenging to categorize him precisely!
