A new RPG from the creators of This War of Mine takes to the magical streets of 20th century Poland

Role-playing video games have taken us on adventures to all sorts of strange locales: grand fantasy landscapes, epic sci-fi universes, sweeping vistas occupied by gods, and otherworldly realms haunted by the dead. However, we've never been swept off to a setting quite like that of The Thaumaturge. That's because this RPG takes place in Warsaw, Poland in the early 20th century—albeit a slightly fantastical version of Warsaw.
As the title suggests, players will take on the role of a thaumaturge in this game. "Hey, TapTap," you may be asking, "what the heck is a thaumaturge?" Good question! According to the wise folks at Merriam-Webster, a thaumaturge (or a thaumaturgist) is "a performer of miracles" or a "magician." Aha!
In the case of The Thaumaturge, the miracles being performed will mostly involve taming weird, demonic beasts known as "salutors." Protagonist Wiktor Szulski was born with a family gift (or is it a curse) that forces him to hunt down otherworldly baddies from one end of 1905 Warsaw to the other. Along the way, Szulski will run into real figures from the history of this time, which will help the players learn more about the actual people and struggles of the era.
In addition to its unique blend of fantasy and historical setting, The Thaumaturge promises a deep story that is shaped by the decisions players make and challenging turn-based combat.
If that's enough to grab your interest, stay tuned for the launch of The Thaumaturge. It arrives on February 20, 2024 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. TapTap's editors will be checking it out and sharing our thoughts in a quick review right around launch time.
